Annotated Bibliography

This is an annotated bibliography for secondary sources that would be used in the research essay. The research will investigate various factors such as mental retardation, autism, environmental factors and abnormal facial structures that affect language development among children.

Angell, Carol A. Language Development and Disorders: A Case Study Approach. Sudbury, Mass: Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2009. Print.

This book provides a professional guide on how to prepare and conduct research on language development. It also has numerous case studies that illustrate factors affecting language development. The author also provides real-life clinical applications and techniques for researching language development. Various language disorders are also discussed in the book. In my view, Angell’s book is suitable because it provides comprehensive guidelines for potential specialists of language development. It also discusses complex issues relating to language development among children.

Barrett, Martyn D. The Development of Language. Hove, East Sussex: Psychology Press, 2007. Print.

In this book, Martyn Barrett presents a general overview of the development of language among children. The main strands of language development that are covered in the book include phonological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic development. Barrett also reviews language development among children with disabilities in the book. The book also deals with the perception of speech and learning of words, phonological acquisition, aspects of natural and complexities in grammatical acquisition, the development of conversational and disclosure skills and development of sign language among children who cannot hear or speak. In my view, this book fits in to the research that exists on the subject because it provides clear and lucid summaries of the current knowledge available on the development of language among children. It also circumspectly explains and evaluates major theories of language development among children.

Hoff, Erika, & Shatz, Marilyn. Blackwell Handbook of Language Development. Malden: Blackwell Publishing, 2009. Print.

In this book, Erika and Marilyn provide comprehensive reviews of major topics in language development. Some of the major topics discussed include factors affecting language development and causes and treatment of language disorders among children. The authors also outline research areas in language development that have not been fully explored. The authors review language development from infancy to early childhood. In my opinion, the detailed analysis of language development by Erika and Marilyn makes this book a fundamental tool for research that can be used by researchers, students and specialists from diverse disciplines.

Hoff, Erika. Research Methods in Child Language: A Practical Guide. Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell, 2011. Print.

In this book, Erika provides a comprehensive guideline for researchers and specialists who study child language. The author also offers a comprehensive assessment of laboratory and naturalistic techniques that can be utilized by researchers to study language development among children. Moreover, Erika reviews new research methods such as the functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) that can be used to establish how activities of the brain may impact language development. In my opinion, this book is important for the research topic because it provides guidelines on how to conduct researches on language development. Thus, a researcher would be able to identify easily factors that affect language development among children. Moreover, the book elaborates on traditional research methods such as coding of speech samples in order to beef up the already existing knowledge on language development.

Karmiloff, Kyra, & Karmiloff-Smith, Annette. Pathways to Language: From Fetus to Adolescent. Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press, 2011. Print.

This book describes the process and issues related to language development from birth to adolescence. For example, the authors assert that an unborn baby in the womb is able to distinguish the voice of the mother. The book also covers a variety of experimental and theoretical approaches that can be used to study language development, hence helps in identification of factors that affect language development. For my part, this book is useful because it covers language development comprehensively. It also presents a detailed analysis of theories of language development thus facilitates deeper understanding of the language development process.

Oates, John, & Grayson, Andrew. Cognitive and Language Development in Children. Milton Keynes: Open University, 2004. Print.

In this book, Oates and Grayson focus mainly on the development of cognitive or thinking ability and language among children. The authors explore key aspects in cognitive and language development, for example, they examine how brain architecture affects cognitive and language development among children. This book is useful because the authors use relevant and up-to-date information. The book is highly innovative and facilitates the understanding of language development among children.

Yule, William, & Rutter, Michael. Language Development and Disorders. Philadelphia: Lippincott, 2010. Print.

This provides a detailed review of language development and the disorders related to it. It also reviews factors that affect language development among children, for example, Chapter 7 discusses environmental influences on language development among children. Similarly, Chapters 10 and 12 reviews disorders that affect language development among children. In my view, this book is important to the research topic because it highlights various factors that affect language development among children. It also shows how impaired language development and language disorders affect the social, educational and occupational development in an individual. Yule and Rutter also bring together and evaluate several theories on language development. This adds up in the available knowledge on language development. The book is very useful for speech therapies. The authors also suggest that alternative communication systems or technologies can be used to assist children with impaired language development. The book also provides a wide range of perspectives that can be very useful for communication specialists.
